WHAT IS A MINI SKID STEER?

A mini skid steer is a compact version of the full-size skid steer that has become an indispensable tool for many industries.

Because of its smaller size — typically small enough to fit through a 36” gate — operators will stand on the back of (or even walk behind) a mini skid steer instead of sitting in a seat as they would in a full-size skid steer.

Mini skid steers have grown in popularity in recent years as their power-to-weight ratio has increased while their small size has remained relatively unchanged — making them more nimble, less expensive, and easier to transport than full-size alternatives.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MINI SKID STEER ATTACHMENTS?

A full range of attachments for mini skid steers are available to help you tackle any and every job, including:

Many of these attachments can even do double duty. Pallet forks, for example, can be used to transport pallets, pry up concrete, and carry large items.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT ATTACHMENT FOR THE JOB?

The right attachment for your task depends on what you need to accomplish.

For example, if you’re moving large, solid objects like paver stones, concrete blocks, slabs, and large rocks, a mini skid steer hardscape grapple claw will help you get the job done quickly and easily — even in tight spaces.

Or, if you need to mix or transport concrete in places that the full-size concrete truck can’t reach, a mini skid steer concrete mixer bucket may be the solution.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE ATTACHMENT?

To determine the right size attachment for you, first take a look at the items you’ll be moving with the skid steer.

If, for example, you’re moving small branches, a smaller pallet fork or bucket will do the job nicely. But if you’re moving large logs or stumps, a larger, more aggressive log grapple or stump bucket grapple will make your job easier and safer.

Another factor to consider is the weight of the attachment itself. Mini skid steers often have lower weight capacities, so a heavier attachment will reduce the amount of weight the equipment can carry.

A smaller, light-duty attachment can free up capacity so you can move more in a single trip.

HOW DO ATTACHMENTS CONNECT TO THE MINI SKID STEER?

Many attachments connect to the mini skid steer through a system known as Skid Steer Quick Attach (SSQA), Quick Attach (QA), or Quick Tach.

These three different names refer to the same process, where spring-loaded, pneumatically-controlled levers on the mini skid steer arms engage pins that insert at the top and bottom of the attachment.

Instead of having to manually install the attachment, SSQA allows the driver to release one implement in a matter of seconds and connect to another implement in the same amount of time.
